Using a filter bag for tea is a convenient and efficient way to brew loose leaf tea. Here’s a simple guide to help you use filter bags for tea:
Materials Needed
Loose leaf tea
Empty tea filter bags (also known as tea sachets or tea infuser bags)
Hot water
Tea cup or teapot
Steps
Choose Your Tea:
Select your preferred loose leaf tea. Measure the appropriate amount. Typically, this is about 1 to 2 teaspoons of loose leaf tea per cup of water, but it can vary depending on the type of tea and your taste preference.
Fill the Filter Bag:
Open the empty tea filter bag.
Scoop the measured loose leaf tea into the bag. Avoid overfilling to allow enough space for the tea leaves to expand.
Seal the Filter Bag:
Some filter bags come with a drawstring or adhesive strip to seal the top. If your bags do, pull the string or fold the adhesive strip to close the bag.
If your filter bags are open-ended, you can fold the top over a few times or use a small clip to keep the leaves inside.
Prepare the Water:
Boil water and let it cool slightly to the appropriate temperature for your type of tea. Different teas require different water temperatures:
Green tea: 160-180°F (71-82°C)
White tea: 160-185°F (71-85°C)
Oolong tea: 185-205°F (85-96°C)
Black tea: 200-212°F (93-100°C)
Herbal tea: 200-212°F (93-100°C)
Brew the Tea:
Place the filled filter bag into your tea cup or teapot.
Pour the hot water over the tea bag.
Steep:
Allow the tea to steep for the recommended amount of time. This varies by tea type:
Green tea: 1-3 minutes
White tea: 2-3 minutes
Oolong tea: 3-5 minutes
Black tea: 3-5 minutes
Herbal tea: 5-7 minutes
Remove the Filter Bag:
Once the tea has steeped to your desired strength, remove the filter bag from the cup or teapot.
Gently squeeze the bag to extract the remaining liquid, if desired.
Enjoy Your Tea:
Your tea is now ready to drink. Add any desired sweeteners, milk, or lemon.
Tips
Experiment with Amounts: Adjust the amount of tea and steeping time according to your taste preference.
Reuse Filter Bags: If you’re using high-quality loose leaf tea, you may be able to steep the leaves more than once. Simply refill the bag with water and steep again.
Compost Used Leaves: Consider composting the used tea leaves if you have a garden. They make excellent compost material.
By following these steps, you can enjoy a perfectly brewed cup of tea using filter bags.
